Also, since these struts are compressed when the hatch/tailgate is closed, they provide positive lifting pressure when you unlock the hatch, pushing it away slightly from the latching mechanism. I’ve been whacked in the head a few times by a hatch that won’t stay open. It’s not a Volvo problem, it happens to all hatchbacks and station wagons eventually.
